Inbox Pakistan to build 700,000 Laptops for AIOU

..and as promised here is the answer. Allama Iqbal Open University and Intel recently signed an agreement to equip AIOU students with 700,000 Intel-powered classmate personal computers by 2009. Inbox Pakistan is the Intel partner that will assemble and deliver these machines over a 3 year period. This by far is the largest local hardware project to be handled by any assembler. Inbox is already the top PC maker for Pakistan as per the IDC rankings, and this only solidifies its position and volumes.

Lets hope this works out. Its things like these that help rebuild that already-eroded hope I have that we will have computer-literate students someday sipping chai and coding/surfing/learning using technology. See below to see what this laptop looks like:

Classmate PC’s are Intel’s answer to MIT’s OLPC project. It is basically a celeron M processor laptop with a 1 or 2 GB flash drive.

    Is there any evidence out there that this deal has been struck? The GM Software & Services at Inbox does’nt know about it.

    Yeah it doesnt. But its been mentioned on the intel global intranet (public do not have access, got the info through friends at Intel US) and I spoke to the management at Inbox who confirmed the deal.

    By the year 2009 a common p4 computer would have come to 100US$ price :p so it is a stupid deal :D
